冬の積雪が2mを超える新潟県南魚沼市にある、創業約50年の老舗温泉旅館「龍言」の改修プロジェクトである。過酷な冬と雪を、自然から与えられた恵みとして捉え直して活かし、雪国を象徴する新しいサスティナブルな旅館として再生することを目指した。建物は19世紀に建てられた古民家を移築してつくられていた。豪雪に耐えるための骨太で重厚な佇まいを今に残しており、一部は国の登録有形文化財に指定されている。雪国の建築は雪に対峙するために、極めて機能的で即物的な形状をもつ。龍言ではそれが過度になってしまっており、建物は暗く閉ざされていた。我々が試みたのは、その閉塞的な要素をすべて取り除くことであった。窓もなく閉ざされた長い廊下を外部化して風景や風との接点を増やし、風通しを確保するために一部の棟を解体した。徹底的な引き算のデザインを行い、建築と自然が接続されることで、歴史を引継ぎながらも、雪国の四季の豊かさという全く新しい価値を感じることのできるryugonへと生まれ変わった。（蘆田暢人／蘆田暢人建築設計事務所）

This is a renovation project of Ryugon, a Japanese-style hotel with a history of 50 years located in Minami Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture, where snow can pile up to over 2 meters. We aimed to revitalize the hotel in a sustainable way that represents this snow country by reinterpreting the harsh winter and snow as gifts from nature. The structure was built by moving an old residence built in the 19th century, and it boasts thick beams and a solid base to endure the heavy snows. A section of the residence is a registered tangible cultural property. Snow country architecture is built to stand up against the snow, so it is extremely functional and practical. But Ryugon has grown too functional and practical, making the building dark and closed off. We attempted remove all the elements making it feel closed off. We opened up a long, windowless corridor by placing it outside to increase exposure to the scenery and outside air. To improve air flow, we took down a part of a building. By thoroughly “subtracting” from our design, we improved the connection between nature and the structure, while also retaining historical aspects, to rebirth Ryugon to have a completely new value based on the richness of the four seasons in snow country.（Masato Ashida / Ashida Architect & Associates）

这是位于新泻县南鱼沼市创立约50年的老号温泉旅馆“龙言(ryugon)”的改装项目。那里冬天积雪超过2米。虽然冬天大雪很艰苦，但我们认为这是大自然的恩惠，以作为代表雪乡、新环保型的旅馆改造为目标。
该建屋用建于19世纪的古民宅移筑，为了耐大雪仍维持既坚固又岿巍的样子，并一部分被指定登记有形文化遗产。一般在雪乡建筑面对大雪，往往具有功能性及现实性的外形。本来“龙言”过度趋向其特点，建屋被严密地封闭。
我们先要解除那些闭塞感，把连窗户也没有的走廊开放了。并促进接触外景和外气，把通风弄好，拆毁了建屋的一部分。通过彻底讲究精简设计，让建筑连接大自然，“龙言”不论继承其历史，还作为客人能感到雪乡四季的新价值的“ryugon”再生了。（芦田畅人／芦田畅人建筑设计事务所）
