伝統が重くのしかかる20世紀中旬のフランスで、工業製品をそのまま使うデザインをぶつけてシャルロット・ペリアンがデビューしたとするならば、今回のイベント会場となった東京ステーションホテルのまさにクラシックな宴会場は、それを伝える格好の場だと思った。
そのために、近代的な空間を画いてデザインしたであろう彼女の家具を、近代的に作り替えられた会場構成で展示するのではなく、半透明のガラスを用いることで、宴会場を彼女の生きた時代の背景として透かしで見せた。一方、日本にインスパイヤされていたデザインを各所に残した彼女のもう一面を表現するため、半透明のガラスを円形の屏風のように仕立てた。これは彼女が1959年に帝国ホテルで手がけたエールフランス東京営業所の、見方によっては屏風や障子を思い浮かべさせる光る壁とのつながりを自分なりに表現してみた。
さらに展示ステージに置かれている家具の一部が、会期中、まわりでお茶を楽しむ時の椅子に使われていたことで、彼女のデザインは博物館でもエリートのためでもなく、みんなのためだと訴えていたことの表現に繋がったと思う。

If Charlotte Perriand made her debut, using industrial products directly for her design in mid-20th century in France under strong pressure of tradition, this time’s event site, a classical banquet hall in TOKYO STATION HOTEL is the best place to show it. She was supposed to design furniture, picturing modern space at that time. On the one hand we chose to show the classical banquet hall as the background of the period she was living, using half-translucent glass, instead of constructing modern exhibiting space. On the other hand, we created Japanese style round shape folding screens with the same glass in order to express another face of her design which was inspired by Japan. This is my own way to express the connection to glowing walls, which remind you of Japanese style screens, of AIRFRANCE Tokyo office designed by her in IMPERIAL HOTEL TOKYO in 1959. Some pieces of exhibited furniture were also placed in café space. It results in expressing her idea “Design is not for museums or elites. It is for everyone” (Guen BERTHEAU-SUZUKI)
